Absence and Holiday Absence

Attendance at school is important and research shows missing school for even a day can mean a child is less likely to achieve good attainment, which can have a significant effect on their life chances.

At Standens Barn Primary School, we encourage all pupils to strive for 100% attendance; every day and every lesson counts.

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, please contact our main school office:

Tel: 01604 - 413151

Please contact the school on each day that your child is not attending.

If we do not hear from you, our office staff will contact you but if we are still unable to make contact, staff may conduct a home visit to ensure all is safe and well.  Once checks are completed or within 5 days, schools must report the child as missing from education with an Education Inclusion Officer.

All schools in the country must follow Department for Education guidance regarding attendance, this clearly states that no child should miss school apart from in exceptional circumstances and schools must continue to take steps to reduce absence to support children’s attainment.

There are 175 non-school days per year for holidays, shopping and appointments. There is no need, except in extreme circumstances, to miss a day of education.

Please ensure that dental and medical appointments are made outside of school hours. Our office staff will ask you for the evidence of medical appointments, if this cannot be provided, the absence may be unauthorised.

Collection of children

If your child has to leave school, due to exceptional circumstances, we ask that you notify us beforehand via telephone then come to the main reception to collect him/her. If you are going to be late collecting your children, please telephone us as soon as possible.

The school day finishes at 3.15 pm and children will be released from around 3.20pm, in order to give them time to collect their belongings and to hand out letters etc.

Please wait outside the classroom dismissal area and your child will be released to you.

Family holiday requests during term time

From September 2013, schools may not authorise absence or time for holidays during term time unless there are ‘exceptional circumstances’.  If five or more consecutive day’s unauthorised leave is taken you will be referred to the Local Authority and this may result in the issue of a fixed penalty notice.

Please visit our school office for a 'Leave of absence request form' which you will need to complete and return to the school office. Alternatively, you can download the form below and return it in person or via email. If you have any questions, please speak to Mrs James, Mrs Shipley or Mrs Bates.

• Please note 1 day equates to 2 sessions and there are 5 lessons during each school day.
