Wellbeing & Family Support

We believe that children achieve their best when they feel happy, safe and supported. We are committed to working closely with children, parents and carers to promote positive wellbeing and remove any barriers that may affect learning, attendance or personal development.

Parents and carers are always welcome to get in touch for support, advice or simply to discuss any concerns they may have.

Our Family Support Worker

Hi, I'm Nina Patterson. As the Family Support Worker at Standens Barn Primary School, my role is to work alongside children, parents and families to help overcome any barriers that may impact a child's wellbeing, attendance or learning. I provide practical advice and support with a range of family needs, including emotional wellbeing, behaviour, routines, attendance and signposting to other services when needed. My aim is to build positive relationships with families, offering guidance and encouragement so that together we can ensure every child feels happy, safe and able to achieve their full potential. Parents are always welcome to contact me for support, advice or simply to talk through any concerns they may have.

How We Support Children's Wellbeing

Building Positive Relationships

We help children feel valued, listened to and supported by:

  • Developing trusting and caring relationships
  • Listening carefully to children's thoughts and feelings
  • Showing empathy and understanding
  • Celebrating strengths, successes and achievements

Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment

We work hard to ensure every child feels safe and respected by:

  • Promoting emotional and physical safety
  • Encouraging kindness, respect and inclusion
  • Challenging bullying and discrimination
  • Helping children feel a strong sense of belonging

Supporting Emotional Development

Children are supported to understand and manage their emotions through:

  • Learning to recognise and express feelings
  • Developing coping strategies such as mindfulness, deep breathing and talking to trusted adults
  • Modelling positive emotional regulation
  • Recognising that all feelings are valid and important

Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles

Good wellbeing starts with healthy habits. We encourage:

Promoting Positive Mental Health

We create opportunities for open conversations about wellbeing by:

  • Normalising discussions about feelings and mental health
  • Teaching self-care and stress-management strategies
  • Monitoring changes in behaviour, mood or engagement
  • Seeking additional support early when concerns arise

Working in Partnership with Families

Strong partnerships between home and school are essential. We:

  • Maintain open communication with parents and carers
  • Share successes and concerns
  • Signpost families to specialist services when needed
  • Promote a consistent approach between home and school

Early support can make a significant difference. We:

  • Identify concerns as early as possible

  • Follow safeguarding and wellbeing procedures at all times
