                   TERM 3  February 2025

WELCOME  Image of school logo

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our exciting new-look newsletter.

We are at the end of Term 3 and I would like to take a moment to thank you for your continued support. It has been another fabulous term, and we could not achieve this without all of those in our school community- children, staff and parents/carers.

The term has been full of exciting learning opportunities, including welcoming visitors, blasting rockets, being Victorians and enjoying a virtual dinosaur museum. We are so proud of our curriculum offer and the wonderful opportunities our children receive.

I have the privilege of walking around our school every day and seeing the whole team at work. I have huge pride when I see our children and staff demonstrating BEST and I am thrilled to be able to share some examples of this in our newsletter.

I hope you all enjoy a restful break. We look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 24th February 2024 at 8:45 a.m.

Fossil fun!

3R & 3H have enjoyed their virtual visits from Ali and Phil from Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre. They found out all about how fossils are made, the incredible Mary Anning and about the mysterious creatures found on Charmouth Beach. They have also been exploring the loan box and polishing their own ammonites.

Boccia Competition

Some of our children in Key Stage 2 represented our school at a Boccia competition at Behams Sports centre. They were very brave to try a new sport and they supported each other with enthusiasm. Well done to them all!

Mission Control

Reception children have been learning about Space and have even been to the moon in their rocket. Many of our older children were incredibly jealous and wanted to join them!

London Landmarks

Years 1 & 2 have enjoyed their London learning and have painted some fantastic London landmarks. We have been amazed by Stephen Wiltshire's art and recreated their own versions with such wonderful details and observations.

F1 in Schools Competition

On Friday 7th February, our F1 club attended the F1 in schools competition at Aston University and we are so pleased to announce that Aerobarnamic Racers received a place in the National Finals after receiving 4 awards:

3rd place overall

Best engineered car

Fastest car

Pit display award

Standens Stormers also won the Judge's Choice Award.

                                                           Wow! What a day!

Both teams have dedicated their time, efforts and enthusiasm and created wonderful presentations, portfolios and fast car designs. We are so proud of their achievements and the demonstration of BEST.

Thank you to Mr High and Miss Haines for your hard work and encouraging our children. Thank you to Benn Security and Country Lion (Northampton) Ltd for your sponsorship of our teams and to Northampton College for supporting us with testing our designs.

Victorians

Year 6 have enjoyed learning about life during the Victorian times. They began the term as a Victorian school child. They even had a special guest who was kind enough to spare some time from her very busy schedule.

Teachers particularly enjoyed the day!

Thank you for all the hard work with the costumes. The children looked absolutely amazing.

Space

Year 5 began their term by designing and launching rockets. They had so much fun and their designs were amazing! Year 5 also worked out the distance between the planets using fruit and toilet paper! 1 toilet paper sheet is equal to 16,000,000km!! The children also created their own imitations of Starry Night by Van Gogh.

Landscape Art

As part of their Art curriculum, Year 4 have been learning about the environmental artist, Richard Shilling, and ephemeral sculpture. They have also focused on the work of landscape artist James Brunt. As a result, they have individually created clay leaves which they will put together to create one collaborative piece of artwork.

SBPS SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMImage of SLT owl

This term we held our first meeting with our school leadership team.

Whilst we missed the company of some of the members of our team (who were at the F1 in Schools competition), our Year 6 House Captains and Vice Captains had a fabulous discussion with Mrs James about their views on school attendance, their ideas about articles for the school newsletter and events that they will be supporting during the next term. They were a wonderful example of BEST.

Image of BEST owl

This term we held another sketchbook assembly and we focused on drawing our favourite kind of bird- the Barn owl!  The children never cease to amaze us during this time, their resilience and ability to focus is wonderful and they achieved such incredible results

In our other assemblies, we have focused on how we look after our mental health and how we can keep ourselves and each other safe. We have given a reminder about the roles of some of our staff and what they should during times when they may feel unsafe.

We have also reminded our children about how to remain safe when they hear the fire alarm or when we have to stay in our classrooms and remain quiet.

We always discuss how our assemblies are linked with our BEST ethos and our British Values:

British values

We are so proud to be a No Outsiders school and we actively encourage and teach our children to remember that we are ‘all different, all welcome’. We continue to encourage respect and tolerance to prepare them for the world in which they live.

We hold regular whole school and class-based assemblies with follow-on lessons which look at examples of diversity and inclusion that exist around us.

During a main school assembly,Image of Paddington Bear we listened to Paddington Bear and discussed the following:

"I always remember what Mrs Brown says; "In London, everyone is different. But that means anyone can fit in. I think she must be right because although I don't look like anyone else, I really do feel at home. Happy new year, love from Paddington."

We talked about what this meant and how we could remember this:

“At Standens Barn Primary School, everyone is different. But that means anyone can fit in. Although we may not look or be like anyone else, we should all feel at home”

Our classroom assemblies and lessons allow our children to debate comfortably and safely whilst acknowledging that different ideas exist, and we are all different but we all belong.

This term, the children have been sharing and discussing the following books with their teachers:

Reception: Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly

Year 1 and 2: The Great Big Book of Families

Year 3: The Truth About Old People

Year 4: My Beautiful Voice

Year 5: My Shadow is Pink

Year 6: The Proudest Blue

AttendanceImage of alarm clock

Thank you to all of you who have changed your alarm clocks and are now arriving earlier at school to ensure your child(ren) have a settled start to the school day and do not miss out on any learning.

The school day begins at 8:50am so please ensure your child(ren) arrives at school by 8:45am. The gates will be closed by 9:00am.

We will continue to rigorously monitor attendance, communicate daily with you and undertake home visits where necessary to ensure our children and families are safe.

Appointments should be made outside the school day or during school holidays. If appointment confirmation are not received, we will continue to unauthorise any related absence. Holidays will not be authorised, and absence of this nature may result in a penalty notice from the Local Authority (please see our attendance policy for further details).

We are passionate about the importance of children attending school daily and on time, and we celebrate this every week, but this can only happen with the support of yourselves. Our current whole school attendance is excellent and above the national average, and we want this to continue next term.

Friends of Standens Barn

Our Friends of Standens Barn are valued members of our school community - they help us organise many school events throughout the year and the funds we raise are all used to help with treats for our children.

In December, our staff and FOSB led stalls at our Winter Barnanza and we are pleased to announce that your kind donations and generosity helped us to raise a total of £1554.30.

We are always looking for more parents and carers to join our FOSB, so if you would like to donate your time and ideas and help us to organise future events for our children, please email sbps-admin@sbps.inmat.org.uk

Please continue to check your emails, our school website and social media for updates about our curriculum offer for your child. We regularly send out and upload information, especially at the beginning of a new school term.

We would also encourage you to ask your child about what they have been doing-  we have the pleasure of talking to them about their school experiences, they are open, honest and very enthusiastic!

Reminders

  • To keep all our children safe, the play equipment/trim trail on our school playground must not to be used before and after school. The equipment is only supervised during playtimes, lunchtimes and specific PE lessons.

  • Please remember the car park is shut between 8:30am and 9:10am and from 3:00pm until 3:30pm unless you hold a disability badge/permit for vehicles (this must be displayed clearly). Our caretaker will open the school gates when it is time to do so.

  • Please remember that if your child would like to bring their bike or scooter into school, they must wear a helmet.

  • We are committed to BEST and treating you with respect and courtesy and to be Thoughtful to you all. Our staff also have the right to work in a safe environment, so we ask that you treat them thoughtfully and with respect and courtesy. Offensive behaviour will result in you being asked to leave and may result in prosecution.

Parking

Please be Safe and Thoughtful when collecting or dropping your child(ren) off.

We understand that it can be very stressful in the mornings when we have to be in multiple places but it is vital that ALL car drivers remain courteous to all of those in our community and that they also drive and park within the law to ensure we do not hurt or harm anyone.

The Highway Code Rule 243 states that it is illegal to stop or park near the following:

  • near a school entrance (including zig zag lines)
  • anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services
  • at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank
  • on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing
  • opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
  • near the brow of a hill or hump bridge
  • opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle
  • where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane
  • where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles
  • in front of an entrance to a property
  • on a bend
  • where you would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities
