WELCOME 
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a wonderful start to the new calendar year. Although it has been wet and grey outside, school life has definitely been full of colour, excitement and fun!
Once again, the children have enjoyed many fabulous opportunities and experiences which have all hugely supported their learning and development. It has been a joy to walk the pathways of our school and see such happy, focused children who are determined to be BEST every day.
I hope you all enjoy a restful week. We look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 23rd February 2026 at 8:45a.m (arriving at school by 8:40am).

Celebrating our success- above national outcomes!
|

This term, we received a letter of congratulations from Bridget Phillipson, the Secretary of State for Education (please see below).
I am incredibly proud of our children’s achievements and the dedication of our staff and I am thrilled that their hard work has been recognised by the Department for Education.
This success shows just how well our school is doing nationally (the average national outcome for disadvantaged children was 47%, and we achieved 69%!) and reflects the care, commitment, and dedication of our staff, along with the effort and determination our pupils show every day.
The letter, and our results, highlight our strong vision that all our children should be exposed to wonderful opportunities, and we should continually thrive to give them all boundless ambition and aspiration. Every child deserves to be their BEST both now and, in the future, and we remain clear in our commitment to this. We regularly reflect on our practice to make things even better, building on our strengths and working hard to improve to ensure every child gets the support they need to succeed. We are proud of what we do well and are committed to closing gaps so that every child can be happy, confident, and successful.
We are also so very thankful for the continued support of our families as we work together to give every child the best possible opportunities. This is a wonderful achievement for our whole school community and a moment we can all celebrate together.

Our Reception Superheroes!
Children in reception had the best start to their learning by wearing their capes and masks and being such enthusiastic superheroes. They have been Brave and searched for Evil Pea, they have rescued their friends from scary villains and completed some terrifying obstacles. They have also designed their own amazing costumes and created their own superhero cities. As part of their learning, Giraffes have also welcomed visitors from the Ambulance and Fire service- they got to look inside the ambulance and around a fire engine.

Year 4 Art
Year 4 have been hard at work creating clay leaves which will be put together to create a collaborative clay sculpture. They have been looking at the work of nature artist Richard Shilling, sketching leaves and creating their own templates.

Ship Ahoy!
Year 1 & 2 had fun dressed as pirates for their new unit of work called Ship Ahoy!
They all attended Pirate School, played games in the hall and came up with their new pirate name!
As part of this unit, Year 2 have also used the VR Headsets to explore Captain Hooks pirate ship!
From finding treasure to seeing tentacles, some even went below deck and found Captain Hook's office!

Say hello to our BEST babies
As part of their learning in PHSE, the children in Year 1 will be learning all about babies and how they grow and develop during their first year of life. Through stories, discussion and observation, they will explore key developmental milestones such as smiling, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, first words and early social skills.
To make this learning extra special and real-life, we are excited to welcome twins Arlo and Amorie to our Year 1 classrooms once a month.
These sessions are really valuable and encourage curiosity, empathy, caring attitudes and a wonderful understanding of how we all grow and change. All learning will be age-appropriate and focused on development, care and respect.
A big thank you to Matthew and Tia for sharing their babies with us.

Stepping back in time
Year 6 enjoyed stepping back into Victorian history and had a brilliant Victorian School Day. The effort put into the costumes was outstanding — thank you, parents! The children loved stepping back in time and discovering that Victorian schools were a lot stricter than today… a lesson they won’t forget!

Year 6 STEM project
Our Year 6 children also had an electrifying time at Northampton Academy. They explored electricity and how it works and also had some fun creating different types of circuits. Thank you to Northampton Academy for the invitation, and we look forward to welcoming you to our school very soon.

Blast off!
Year 5 designed and made their own rockets and prepared them for an exciting rocket launch by making sure they were aerodynamic before they made their way to the stars.

Year 5 have also been finding out how we get day and night. They have experimented with torches and balls to help explain how this occurs!

Ammonite Art
The children in 3R have created amazing paintings of ammonites inspired by the artist helenhobbsuk as part of their unit of work this term. They have all produced amazing pieces of work which even caught the eye of the artist herself!

As part of their unit of work, 3R also enjoyed their zoom visit with palaeontologist Phil from Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre. They were shown fossils, the skull of the Charmouth dinosaur and lots more. Phil was very impressed with the children’s knowledge and their enthusiasm!

F1 in Schools
Our STEM racing club have spent the last term getting ready for the F1 in schools competition, which took place on Friday 6th February at Aston University.
V-GLLAD Victory and Red Owl Racing had an amazing time competing – the day was filled with racing, competition and so much enthusiasm.
On top of an amazing day, Red Owl Racing came away with the 3rd place trophy and fastest car as well as being nominated for the Sponsorship and marketing award. We are so pleased to announce that they will now be competing in the national competition. V-GLLAD were also nominated for the pit display award. Wow! What a day STEM Racing UK

Baby news!
We would also like to share the wonderful news that, at the beginning of January, Mrs Gardner welcomed her new baby into the world- a beautiful baby girl called Connie.
Mum, dad and baby are all well and enjoying their new life as a family of 3. Congratulations!

During our assemblies this term, the children have been focusing on BEST and how we can follow this in all areas of our lives, no matter where we are or who we are with.
We have reminded our children about how they can keep themselves safe and how they may need to be brave when they have worries or when they feel frightened.
Within our school, all the adults understand BEST and how to keep children safe so the children are encouraged to speak with adults who they feel comfortable with. The children are also aware that we have a safeguarding team and sometimes information may be shared with them. The adults on the safeguarding team may also have further conversations with the children themselves and will then work with others, including parents, to ensure children remain safe, whether that be in school or at home or within another environment.
Throughout the school year, the children regularly discuss how to keep safe during general classroom discussions and through numerous specific learning opportunities, such as PSHE, so this information is not new to them; it is part of our ethos and culture.
In particular, we have discussed how we might keep safe in and around our school. We have discussed the importance of wearing cycling helmets, how to keep safe online and what to do during a fire alarm along with reminders about where we should go and what we should do.
We have also reminded our children that sometimes an alarm might not be heard but an adult in school may tell us we have to stay in our classrooms to keep ourselves safe. This may happen for several reasons such as unusual weather, a dog running around the school playground or a drone over our school.
We have reassured our children that these reasons are very unlikely to happen, but we still must know how to keep ourselves safe.
Our children understand that we need to practise our fire safety along with how we might need to stay in our classrooms in other situations. They understand we practice these procedures so we can learn how to follow the rules to keep us all safe during these times.

Linked with our No Outsiders learning (all different, all welcome), we used a wonderful image of the London Eye, from the recent New Year's celebrations, to spark our thoughts and ideas about tolerance and respect.

We also listened to part of the speech that was included in the celebration called 'This is what England means to me'. We changed it so it was about our school:
"Because this is what Standens Barn Primary School means to me. It's about liking each other no matter what colour you are, where you're from or who your God is. Because this is our school, this is Standens Barn Primary School."

Being Safe with Mobile Phones
We highly recommend that children leave their mobile phones at home. We always encourage our children to return to school if they encounter any problems at the gate or on their way home so we can support them and help them be safe. We will also contact parents/carers in the event of any emergency.
Children in reception to Year 4 should be taken to the classrooms by an adult each morning and collected from here by an adult too. However, we understand that some children in Year 5 and Year 6 may walk to and from school independently and may therefore carry a mobile phone for peace of mind for all concerned.
We would therefore like to remind all parents/carers to ensure their child turns off their mobile phones before arriving at school and before entering the school gates. All mobile phones are expected to be handed in to their class teacher on arrival and should not be left in lockers or bags.
We will also remind children that they must keep their phone switched off until they leave the school grounds.
With your support, we can maintain a focussed learning environment, minimise distractions and also follow BEST.

Attendance Reminder 
The school doors open at 8:45am so please ensure your child(ren) arrives at school by 8:40am to ensure your child(ren) have a settled start to the school day and do not miss out on any learning. The gates will be closed by 9:00am.

When we monitor attendance within our school, we also monitor lateness and punctuality.
It is vital that children arrive at school on time. We ask that they arrive by 8:40am in readiness for the doors opening at 8:45am. Children begin their day at 8:50am with handwriting and spelling practice, for example.
At 9:00am, reading and literacy lessons begin. If children are late, not only are they missing meet-and-greet moments with staff and settling in time with their friends, but crucial literacy skills, which not only help them now but have a significant impact on their future attainment and outcomes.
We absolutely want our children to thrive and be the BEST that they can be, but we can only do this with your support.
We understand that juggling home life, work life and school life is tricky, but arriving to school on time is also ensuring our children are building valuable life skills for when they become adults (many of us would not arrive late to work!).
Simple ways to improve lateness is ensuring bags, packed lunches and uniforms are ready the night before. Getting to school on time may mean ensuring a good bedtime/sleep routine and setting the morning alarms a little bit earlier!

To keep all our children safe, the play equipment/trim trail on our school playground must not to be used before and after school. The equipment is only supervised during playtimes, lunchtimes and specific PE lessons.

Please remember the car park is shut between 8:30am and 9:10am and from 3:00pm until 3:30pm unless you hold a disability badge/permit for vehicles (this must be displayed clearly). Our caretaker will open the school gates when it is time to do so.

Please remember that if your child would like to bring their bike or scooter into school, they must wear a helmet.

We are committed to BEST and treating you with respect and courtesy and to be Thoughtful to you all. Our staff also have the right to work in a safe environment, so we ask that you treat them thoughtfully and with respect and courtesy. Offensive behaviour will result in you being asked to leave and may result in prosecution.

Please be Safe and Thoughtful when collecting or dropping your child(ren) off.
We understand that it can be very stressful in the mornings when we have to be in multiple places but it is vital that ALL car drivers remain courteous to all of those in our community and that they also drive and park within the law to ensure we do not hurt or harm anyone.
The Highway Code Rule 243 states that it is illegal to stop or park near the following:
- near a school entrance (including zig zag lines)
- anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services
- at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank
- on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing
- opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space
- near the brow of a hill or hump bridge
- opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle
- where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane
- where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles
- in front of an entrance to a property
- on a bend
- where you would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities
